Taisha Carrington
North Country, NY
Born and raised in Barbados, Taisha Carrington’s pursuit of a career in art and design sparked her move to New York. Taisha discovered studio jewelry at Pratt Institute, where she recently graduated with a BFA in Jewelry Design and 1st prize for most outstanding thesis collection. Her thesis also earned her a year long feature with CFDA+, the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s curated platform of top-tier graduate and undergraduate talent from a global community of invited colleges.
Taisha’s work analyzes Caribbean society in a post colonial context. She explores and grasps the dense racial, economic, and social layers of her island and the African diaspora. Her jewelry marries the color and bold forms of African body adornment with the opulence of British royal attire. Taisha views fashion and jewelry as tools for dialogue, social commentary, and activism and as a way to blend cultures through its sources of inspiration and evocations of places and peoples.
Taisha’s love and understanding for three dimensional form informed her winning design of Barbados’ National Monument competition in 2016, which celebrates 50 years of Barbadian independence. The monument sits on the Garrison Savannah in Barbados, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Taisha gained experience in the jewelry industry interning at Oscar De La Renta. She currently works from her personal studio creating bespoke pieces and thoughtful collections with an emphasis on detail and sound technical construction.
The Museum of Arts and Design proudly presents Taisha Carrington during their NYCJW symposium: Emerging, Established, Historical: American Jewelers Speak.
